Using Your Shirt as a Conversation Starter
This is not about having the right script.
It is about being ready and willing in normal, everyday moments. God is already at work in people’s lives. You are simply stepping into that.
What this shirt opens up
Jesus at the Center usually leads to a simple question: “What does that mean?” That gives you a natural way to talk about what it looks like to build your life around Jesus.
How you could respond
Keep it simple and real:
“It means Jesus is not just part of my life, he shapes everything.”
“I am learning to put him at the center of my decisions and priorities.”
“It has changed how I think about my purpose and what really matters.”
A simple way to say it
You don’t need a formula, but if you’re unsure what to say, try something like this:
What it means… “For me, having Jesus at the center means…”
What it not… “It does not mean I do this perfectly, but…”
Why it matters… “Because Jesus…”
What has changed… “It has changed how I…”
Something like this could be your response…
For me, having Jesus at the center means he is not just part of my life, he shapes everything. It does not mean I do this perfectly, but I am learning to trust him more each day. Because of what he has done for me, I want my life to reflect him. It has changed how I think about my priorities and what really matters.
Questions that help open things up
You do not have to force anything. Just stay curious.
“Do you have any kind of spiritual background?”
“Have you ever thought about what you believe about God?”
“What has your experience with church been like?”
Keep the gospel clear
You do not have to say everything, but keep the center clear:
God created us for a relationship with him
Sin ruptured that relationship with him
Jesus lived, died, and rose to restore what was ruptured and bring us back to God
We respond by turning to him and trusting him
The relationship is repaired and life to the full begins
Remember:
“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

If you feel nervous
That’s totally normal! You’re not responsible for how someone responds, but you are called to be faithful. Remember that the Holy Spirit is already at work; so, you can keep it simple and honest:
If the conversation keeps going
You can:
Keep talking and listening
Invite them to church
Offer to read the Bible together
Pray with them if it makes sense
If it does not
That is okay too. You can still…
Final reminder
This is not about saying everything perfectly; it is about being available, being honest, and pointing to Jesus.
And remember to pray…
Pray before, maybe even during, and after a conversation for the person
